Description:

Abstract:

This dataset shows the subdrainage basins (also referred to as sub-watershed or catchments) on Pohnpei. It was derived by Maria Kottermair, University of Guam (2017). Basin boundaries were delineated through hydrological modeling using a 10-meter Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created by U.S. Geological Survey (2001) based on topography compiled in 1975. Note that apparently unnatural boundaries such as series of straight, parallel lines are artifacts of modeling and do not reflect reality.

Purpose: To show the sub-drainage basins on Pohnpei.

The dataset is included the Digital Atlas of Micronesia, module Pohnpei, by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi), in collaboration with Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) University of Guam and partial funding from United States Geological Survey (USGS), under WRRI 104-B Program, project # 2016GU302B.

1. Ran hydrologic model using ArcHydro (fill, flow direction, flow accumulation, etc) using stream definition (minimum drainage area) of 100,000 square meters; 3. Clipped output features with updated shoreline; 4. Cut polygons if they extended over two watersheds; 5. Added additional attributes including watershed ID from watershed shapefile (derived from same model).
